On June, 1 the winners of the 48' Molodist KIFF will receive their awards, and on June 2, the viewers will be able to watch festival's award winning films.

On April, 24 at 12:00 the conference hall of the Aloft Kiev Hotel hosted the press conference of the 48' Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival. The festival programme and locations were announced.

The press conference speaker list included:

  • Pylyp Illienko, Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency;
  • Andrii Khalpakhchi, Director General of the Molodist Film Festival;
  • Ihor Shestopalov, Programme Director of the Film Festival;
  • Pavlo Vaisero, Marketing Director of the M.S.L National Lottery Operator.

This year’s Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival has received more than two thousand applications for participation from almost 100 countries around the globe. Of these, 495 films were submitted to the International Competition for feature films, 768 for the Short Films competition, and 433 for the Student Films competition. Over 200 Ukrainian short films competed for the right to participate in the National Competition.

The winner receives $10,000 and the Scythian Deer statuette for the best film of the International Competition. Traditionally, the sponsor of the Grand Prix and the official partner of the Film Festival is the "Loto Zabava" lottery from the MSL National Lottery Operator.

Pavlo Vaisero, the marketing director at MSL, mentioned why supporting the Kyiv Film Festival remains one of the company’s priorities: "We are glad to see the Molodist Film Festival, social event that is of importance for the whole country, is developing and experimenting. Despite everything, the support of the Film Festival by the MSL National Lottery Operator and "Loto Zabava" lottery remains unaltered, as for us, being a leading Ukrainian lottery operator, supporting social projects like this one is a philosophy that we have been faithful to for several decades."

The “Kyiv” Cinema retains its status as the Molodist Festival Centre. It is here that Opening ceremony and International Competition screenings will take place.

According to the Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency Pylyp Illienko, "This year, the State Film Agency's support to "Molodist" has significantly increased and should amount to 6 million UAH. We always support this event as it is a festival of young cinematographers, students and debutants, and hence the film festival of the future, both European and global. I hope the 48' "Molodist" will be traditionally held at the top level, as the festival is highly regarded by the international cinematographic community".

Billy Wilder’s "Some Like It Hot” will be this year’s opening film. This Hollywood classic starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The American Film Institute named the movie the best comedy of all time, and the songs included in the soundtrack have become major hits.

Festival locations:

  • "Kyiv" Cinema — the festival centre;
  • Butterfly DeLuxe — the official festival cinema.

A seminal event of the 48' Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival is the exhibition of Hans Rudolf Giger (1940-2014), an outstanding Swiss artist and the creator of the xenomorph for Ridley Scott's "Alien". The exhibition will be held with the assistance of the festival' partners - the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine and the Dovzhenko Centre.  The retrospective will run from May 30th to June 30th.

The festival will also feature a screening of “Alien”. The future franchise’s first film premiered 40 years ago, in 1979. It has changed the concept of horror and science fiction films for good. It was Giger who created the Alien's design - the most recognizable monster image in the world of cinematography. This creation helped the artist receive an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The visual concept of the 48' Molodist KIFF

The main image of the 48' Molodist KIFF was also presented at the press conference. The poster has been designed by TRUE ADVERTISING GROUP, the festival’s official creative partner. The symbol of the Molodist Film Festival is a young deer on a spring lawn. It serves as a reminder that the film forum has recently been moved to the warmer season.

Several jury boards will select the best films at the Molodist festival: the International Jury, the National Jury, the Sunny Bunny Jury, the Ecumenical Jury, and the FIPRESCI Jury.

The festival’s programme department has revealed some of the jury members of the 48' Molodist KIFF.

In particular, the FIPRESCI Jury will include Klaus Eder, Viera Langerova, Anton Filatov, while the Ecumenical Jury will involve Lothar Strüber and Dietmar Adler.
