The first “Canadian focus” section at Molodist KIFF
The visitors of the 48th edition of the Molodist KIFF will get an opportunity to see the best films of Canadian cinematographers. Films by the most outstanding directors are presented every year at Molodist. Denis Côté, Renée Beaulieu and others have already visited the festival previously. But for the first time, Canadian films will be featured in a special non-competition selection. The “Canadian focus” is organized with the support of the Embassy of Canada to Ukraine.
The 48' Molodist KIFF will run from May 25 to June 2.
The Great Darkened Days (2018)

The opening film of the “Canadian focus”
Set during World War II, the film centres on Philippe, a draft dodger who is living as a drifter and Charlie Chaplin impersonator. Despite its setting, however, the film makes use of some deliberate anachronisms, including a scene where R.E.M.'s contemporary song "Everybody Hurts" plays on the radio.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Ghost Town Anthology (2019)
Denis Côté
Set in the small town, the film centres on its inhabitants who are struggling to recover after Simon Dubé, the local teenager, died in a car accident. As the family and friends grieve, other residents of the town start to report a number of ghost sightings.
The film premiered at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.
Anthropocene (2018)
Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky, Nicholas de Pencier
Third in a trilogy that includes Manufactured Landscapes (2006) and Watermark (2013), this documentary film follows the research of an international team of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group. The filmmakers follow the scientists in their travels to over 20 countries in order to document evidence of human impact on the Earth.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Giant Little Ones (2018)

The film stars Kyle MacLachlan and Maria Bello as the parents of a teenage boy (Josh Wiggins), whose lives are upended after their son got involved in a strange incident at the party.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Genesis (2018)

The timeline of this film follows the personalities of Guillaume, Charlotte and Felix who are trying to find their identities. The filmmaker portrays his own teenage memories through the lens of his protagonist’s experience in a delicate and yet provocative way.
The film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival.

The best friends Lou and Chantal plan to leave their isolated small town to move to the city. But the consequences of one night and Chantal's possessive ex-boyfriend’s actions threaten their friendship and chances of gaining freedom.
In December 2018, the Toronto International Film Festival included the film to its annual year-end Canada's Top Ten list.
My Dads, My Moms, and Me (2019)

In 2007, the documentary filmmaker Julia Ivanova filmed four gay fathers and the society’s homophobic reaction in the documentary Fatherhood. They were the first generation after same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada. 12 years later, Julia came back to see how the families’ lives have changed.

Maxime Giroux – Canadian filmmaker, whose film Félix & Meira won several awards at the Toronto and Torino film festivals. His film The Great Darkened Days will be the ‘Canadian focus’ opening.
Sylvain Corbeil – Canadian film producer. He has worked on Xavier Dolan’s Mommy and It’s Only the End of the World, that were awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.
François Messier-Rheault – Cinematographer who worked on over 30 films, A Skin so Soft and Ghost Town Anthologyby Denis Côté among them.
Philippe Lesage – Scriptwriter and director of The Demons (2015), the best Canadian film of 2015. Director of Genesis, featured in the ‘Canadian focus’.
