Ennio
Giuseppe Tornatore (born 27 May 1956) is an Italian film director and screenwriter. Born in Bagheria near Palermo, Tornatore developed an interest in acting and the theatre from at least the age of 16 and put on works by Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo. He worked initially as a freelance photographer. Then, switching to cinema, he made his debut with LE MINORANZE ETNICHE in Sicilia, a collaborative documentary film which won a Salerno Festival prize. Subsequently Tornatore released several other award-winning films. NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO was a huge success and earned not only an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, but five BAFTA awards, a Cannes Grand Jury Prize and several more awards from international film festivals. Giuseppe Tornatore also won a Golden Swan at the Cabourg Romantic Film Festival for MALENA, starring Monica Bellucci.
